SynthID is Google's approach to AI content provenance, embedding imperceptible watermarks by subtly biasing token selection during text generation. The watermark survives minor edits and doesn't require external databases to verify. However, research from ETH Zurich demonstrated that basic paraphrasing tools can remove the watermark with over 90% success, limiting its effectiveness against adversarial actors who want to hide AI involvement.
