Homogenization
The concentration of AI applications on a few foundation models, creating powerful leverage but also correlated failure modes across the ecosystem.
Homogenization occurs when many downstream applications build on the same small set of foundation models. This creates efficiency gains through shared infrastructure but means defects in a foundation model are inherited by all adapted models downstream. If GPT-4 has a subtle reasoning flaw, every product built on it has that same flaw. The efficiency gains from homogenization come with concentrated points of failure.
