Cell-free protein synthesis

A method of producing proteins outside of living cells by using extracted cellular machinery in a controlled mixture.

Cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) is a biotechnology technique that produces proteins without using intact living cells. Instead, the protein-making machinery (ribosomes, enzymes, and other factors) is extracted from cells and combined with DNA templates, energy sources, and amino acids in a test tube. This approach allows for same-day results and rapid prototyping, but the complex mixture of required components makes optimization challenging.
